During World War II, Stanley Morrill became a U.S. Army Air Forces ACE, credited with shooting down 9 enemy aircraft in aerial combat. On March 29, 1944, he witnessed the crash of a B-24 bomber near his own airfield at Boxted and, while attempting to rescue the pilot from the burning wreck, was killed when the airplane’s bombs exploded.
