(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Air Corps) Robert H. Mooney (ASN: 0-421285), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a Fighter Airplane with the TENTH Air Force, in aerial operations in the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations, on 26 December 1942. Making a head-on run at nine bombers, Lieutenant Mooney shot down one of them. His fighter plane was smoking as he pulled away from the initial attack. A minute later he made an attack on a Japanese fighter. They raced at each other, machineguns blazing the enemy Zero blew up, and Lieutenant Mooney’s fighter was crippled. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Mooney, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
