The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Air Corps) Robert Benjamin Miller (ASN: 0-21787), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action while serving Command Pilot of a B-24 Liberator Bomber and as Commanding Officer of the 389th Bombardment Group (Heavy), EIGHTH Air Force, while leading a group of B-24 airplanes on a bomb mission over Germany on 6 March 1944. Colonel Miller directed his unit from his position as command and lead pilot. The aircraft leading the combat wing developed mechanical difficulties over the target and was unable to release its bombs. As a result, the bombardier in Colonel Miller’s aircraft has insufficient time to get properly lined up on the target. In spite of heavy enemy opposition he maneuvered the group in a complete turn, chose a new initial point and led it on a second run over the assigned objective, bombing it with devastating results. The gallantry and indomitable will to carry on in the face of great odds and superb leadership displayed by Colonel Miller were directly responsible for the successful completion of this important mission. His devotion to duty and courage under all conditions serve as an inspiration to his fellow flyers. His actions on all these occasions reflect the highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
