Kenneth Meyer was credited with shooting down two enemy aircraft two days prior to his Silver Star action, returning from a raid over France. He was killed in action when his B-17, while on a mission over Villacoublay, France, was attacked and shot down by two German FW-190 fighters, and crashed on July 14, 1943.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Kenneth V. Meyer (ASN: 16019182), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Tail Gunner of a B-17 Flying Fortress Bomber in the 422d Bombardment Squadron, 305th Bombardment Group (Heavy), EIGHTH Air Force, in action on 15 May 1943. After shooting down three of 20 German planes which attacked the Flying Fortress in which he was a Tail Gunner. Technical Sergeant Meyer left his gun and hurried to the controls of the plane when 11 members of the crew were injured. Although the controls of the plane were badly shot up, Technical Sergeant Meyer made a safe landing in England although he was unable to slow the big ship below 150 miles an hour. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technical Sergeant Meyer, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
