During World War II, Dyke Meyer was credited with destroying two enemy aircraft in aerial combat. After serving in the Army Air Forces in World War II, he transferred to the U.S. Air Force when it became a separate branch of service in 1947. He retired as a U.S. Air Force Colonel. Although his date of action for his Distinguished Service Medal was as an officer with the Army Air Forces in World War II, it was belatedly awarded in 1950, as an Air Force Distinguished Service Medal.
