Gary Rubus was commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program in 1967 upon graduation from Dartmouth College. As a Fighter Pilot during the Vietnam War, he was credited with destroying one enemy MiG in aerial combat in October 1972, the last USAF Fighter victory with Cannon fire. He retired in 1998 as a U.S. Air Force Brigadier General.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: First Lieutenant Gary M. Rubus, United States Air Force, was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving as an F-4E Fighter Pilot of the 307th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 31st Tactical Fighter Wing, Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action against the enemy over Southeast Asia on 15 October 1972. On that date, Lieutenant Rubus destroyed one enemy MiG type aircraft in aerial combat. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Air Force.

His devotion to duty and courage under all conditions serve as an inspiration to his fellow flyers. His actions reflect the highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
