Chester McCarty enlisted in the Oregon National Guard in 1926, holding all enlisted ranks through master sergeant. From 1930 to 1936 he served as Assistant Attorney General of Oregon, and was elected to the state senate in 1942, declining to assume that post to accept his commission in the Army Air Forces in 1942. After serving in the Army Air Forces in World War II, he transferred to the U.S. Air Force when it became a separate branch of service in 1947. He retired in 1966 as a U.S. Air Force Major General.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Medal (Air Force) to Major General Chester E. McCarty (AFSN: AO-235959), United States Air Force, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility as Commander of the 403d Troop Carrier Wing in Korea, and subsequently as Commander of the 315th Air Division (Combat Cargo) from 1951 to 1954. He directed the Korean Airlift in 1953 and 1954, and also commanded U.S. Air Force airlift operations in support of the French in Indo-China, including support for the massive airdrops at Dien Bien Phu. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Major General McCarty and his dedicated contributions in the service of his country reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
