(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Air Corps) George P. Mason (ASN: 0-798220), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a B-24 Liberator Bomber of the 718th Bombardment Squadron, 449th Bombardment Group (Heavy), FIFTEENTH Air Force, in aerial operations on 3 November 1945, over Yugoslavia. After bombs away the plane received several direct hits which set it on fire. Captain Mason gave the order to bail out and remained at the controls until all of his crew exited the aircraft. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Mason, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
