    April 1944 – May 1945

Headquarters, 8th Air Force, General Orders No. 101 (June 26, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Air Corps) Bert W. Marshall, Jr. (ASN: 0-404125), United States Army Air Forces, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy as Pilot of a P-51 Mustang Fighter Airplane of the 354th Fighter Squadron, 355th Fighter Group, EIGHTH Air Force, while participating in a large number of fighter operations over Continental Europe from April 1944 to May 1945. During this period, Colonel Marshall served with distinction as Squadron and Group Leader of the 355th Fighter Group. His vigorous and superior combat tactics and zealous prosecution of the aerial offensive against the enemy were a constant source of inspiration for all serving under his command. His determination and willingness to engage the enemy at any cost is borne out by the fact that four of his aircraft were literally “shot out” from under him while establishing his enviable record of enemy aircraft destroyed. On one occasion a fellow pilot returned him “piggy-back” from enemy territory after a forced landing, the first such incident in the history of the EIGHTH Air Force. All missions were carried out with a high degree of success due to Colonel Marshall’s courage, gallantry, and outstanding flying skill. The courage, flying skill, and unyielding fighting spirit displayed by Lieutenant Colonel Marshall are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Army Air Forces.
