Headquarters, 8th Air Force, General Orders No. 101 (June 26, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Flight Officer Anthony L. Marozas (ASN: T-4207), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action while serving as Pilot of a B-17 Flying Fortress Bomber of the EIGHTH Air Force over Germany, on 2 and 18 March 1945 and 4 April 1945. On the first mission, Flight Officer Marozas’ aircraft developed a malfunction in the Number ONE engine, sustained major battle damage, and the navigator was wounded. Undaunted, he reached the target and returned to friendly territory where he accomplished a safe landing. Again on the mission dispatched 18 March 1945, heavy ground fire was encountered over the target. With one engine out, another damaged, and the windshield broken, Flight Officer Marozas left the formation and with a sub-zero wing causing frostbite to his face, maneuvered the plane through heavy flak areas and safely back to base. On 4 April 1945, when anti-aircraft fire set the plane ablaze, Flight Officer Marozas ordered the crew to bail out and at the risk of his own safety, remained at the controls, leaving the plane only after all were clear. Flight Officer Marozas’ gallant actions on each of these missions served as an inspiration to his fellow fliers. The courage, flying skill, and unyielding fighting spirit displayed by Flight Officer Marozas are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Army Air Forces.
