The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major Rano Eugene Lueker, United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force at Dong Xoai Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, on 19 June 1968. On that date, Major Lueker was assigned to airlift extremely hazardous combat essential cargo to the besieged Dong Xoai Special Forces Camp. As U.S. aircraft landed, the air field came under intense mortar attack, and as Major Lueker continued his ground roll, the C-123 unarmed Provider was ambushed by hostile ground forces concealed on both sides of the runway. With unwavering calmness and courage, Major Lueker completed his combat airlift mission and successfully evacuated his badly damaged aircraft to a secure air field. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Major Lueker has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
