During World War II, John Lowell became a U.S. Army Air Forces ACE, credited with shooting down 7.5 enemy aircraft in aerial combat. After the war he transferred to the new U.S. Air Force, and served in the Air National Guard until his retirement in 1953 as a Lieutenant Colonel.
