The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Chaplain’s Corps) Tom Anderson Carroll, United States Army, for gallantry involving close combat with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Chaplain Carroll distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 24 April 1968, while serving as Chaplain, 3d Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, on a reconnaissance in force mission in Kien Hoa Province. As assault troops were disembarking from their tango boat, they wee hit by intense enemy fire. Chaplain Carroll, disregarding his own safety, ran through heavy barrages of enemy fire several times, as he treated wounded men ad carried them back to the boat for evacuation. Chaplain Carroll’s extraordinary heroism in close combat with an armed hostile force is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
