The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Donald W. Kelly, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 23 February 1969 while serving as a platoon sergeant with Troop B, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in the Republic of Vietnam. While serving as a reaction force for Long Binh Post, Troop B was called upon to eliminate a North Vietnamese Army heavy weapons company south of the post. The vehicles were brought on line and the troop assaulted the well-fortified positions. Sergeant Kelly surged slightly ahead of the other tanks passed the first position and assaulted the second trench line approximately forty meters long. Driving over the trench he fired his fifty-caliber machine gun at a point-blank range but still received intense automatic weapons fire and several grenades which bounced off the Sheridan tank. Realizing the immediate danger he ordered a canister round to be fired into the hostile soldiers instantly killing fifteen. He then returned to the main assault until the enemy had been overrun completely. Platoon Sergeant Kelly’s unwavering devotion to duty and gallant actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
