Marcus Lemley was a former Marine corporal and a clerk with the Los Angeles Railway Co. for four years. In 1940 he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as a flying officer. Two years later he transferred to the Air Corps of the U.S. Army as a captain.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Air Corps) Marcus J. Lemley (ASN: 0-1699161), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as a member of the Air Crew of a B-17 Flying Fortress Bomber in Headquarters Squadron, 96th Bombardment Group (Heavy), EIGHTH Air Force, in aerial operations in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Lemley, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
