The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Air Corps) Donald E. Kraman (ASN: 0-813178), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action as Pilot of a Fighter Airplane of the 365th Fighter Group, NINTH Air Force, in action in aerial flight on 16 January 1945. Lieutenant Kraman distinguished himself by outstanding aerial proficiency and courage when he attacked a superior number of enemy aircraft. Demonstrating great skill and forcefulness, Lieutenant Kraman vigorously pressed his attack upon two enemy aircraft and destroyed one and damaged the other. Because of mechanical failure his engines lost power during the course of the previous engagement but he nevertheless dived upon a third FW-190; and with his remaining armament Lieutenant Kraman pursued the enemy aircraft at minimum altitude deep into enemy territory where, by his brilliantly executed tactics, he outmaneuvered his opponent and destroyed him. The exceptional airmanship and gallant actions evidenced by Lieutenant Kraman on this occasion reflect the highest credit upon himself and the Army Air Forces.
