Richard King graduated from The Citadel, and was appointed to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1933. He was captured by the Japanese on December 3, 1944, and held as a Prisoner of War until August 29, 1945. He retired in 1963 as a U.S. Air Force Brigadier General.
