Headquarters, 15th Air Force, General Orders No. 2816 (August 24, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Air Corps) John W. Kelly, United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action while serving as in the crew of a B-17 Flying Fortress Bomber with the 32d Bombardment Squadron, 301st Bombardment Group (Heavy), FIFTEENTH Air Force in the Mediterranean Theater of Action on 27 July 1944. On that date, his bomber was attacked by approximately 70 persistent enemy fighters, and in ensuing engagement, his aircraft was severely damaged. As a result of the attack, fires started, oxygen supply was destroyed and one crewmember was seriously wounded. Despite the overwhelming odds, displaying outstanding courage and professional skill in the face of enemy fire, he and his gallant crew beat off wave after wave of hostile ships, destroying nine and probably destroying or damaging several others. Turning from the target after a successful bombing run, they again encountered heavy enemy opposition, and in spite of the fact that five guns were rendered inoperative and their aircraft severely damaged, they drove off all subsequent attacks, accounting for several more aircraft destroyed or damaged. Through outstanding teamwork and determination, they brought their almost un-airworthy aircraft through to base without further damage or injury to crew. By his conspicuous gallantry, professional skill and devotion to duty, as evidenced throughout his brilliant combat career, he has reflected great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States of America.
