The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Lieutenant Colonel Alpha L. Bowser (MCSN: 0-4749), United States Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States while serving as Commanding Officer of an Artillery Battalion of a Marine Division during the planning for and the operations against the enemy on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, from 1 November 1944 to 1 April 1944. By sound judgment Lieutenant Colonel Bowser brought his battalion to the highest condition of combat readiness. Upon land and under very adverse conditions he, through his outstanding leadership, rapidly emplaced his battalion and maintained such high combat efficiency that his unit was always ready to deliver effective supporting fires where needed. His actions and conduct contributed materially to the success of the mission, and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Lieutenant Colonel Bowser is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
