Headquarters, 8th Air Force, General Orders No. 101 (June 26, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Air Corps) Frederick H. Jurgens (ASN: 0-2015381), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action while serving as a member of the Air Crew of a Bomber in the EIGHTH Air Force, during a mission over Germany, 10 April 1945. Returning from escorting heavy bombers to the target, Lieutenant Jurgens participated in a strafing attack on an enemy airdrome. Undaunted when his aircraft sustained a flak hit, he courageously continued to press home his attack. On the fourth pass, midway across the field and flying at approximately fifty feet, a burst of flak knocked his plane completely over on its back and out of control. With unexcelled self-possession and skill, he righted the aircraft and after a quick check of the instruments, continued his relentless assault. Not until he had destroyed eight enemy planes on the ground and no visual targets remained did Lieutenant Jurgens withdraw and return to base. BY his boldness, gallantry and brilliant combat tactics, Lieutenant Jurgens inspired his fellow flyers and dealt the enemy Air Force a damaging blow. The courage, flying skill, and unyielding fighting spirit displayed by Second Lieutenant Jurgens are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Army Air Forces.
