The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Air Corps) Alma R. Jones (ASN: 0-759018), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action while serving as Pilot of a P-51 Mustang Fighter Airplane of the EIGHTH Air Force, while furnishing penetration support for bombers on a mission deep into Germany, on 12 October 1944. Leading a flight section assigned the top cover position, Lieutenant Jones noticed approximately fifty enemy fighters coming in for a frontal attack on the bombers. With complete disregard for the size of the enemy’s force, he led his eight P-51’s in a daring attack. During the violent battle which ensued, Lieutenant Jones, displaying exceptional courage and combat skill, destroyed three FW-190’s and damaged a fourth. His aggressive tactics, gallant leadership, and determination to destroy the enemy, afforded excellent protection to the formation of bombers.
