The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Air Corps) Milton W. Johnson (ASN:0-34099), United States Army Air Forces for gallantry in action against the enemy on May 18, 1944, when this officer was informed that the crew members of an American bomber were drifting on a life raft in Hansa Bay, New Guinea, and were being fired on by enemy shore batteries near a war point, he took off in an A-20 and proceeded without fighter escort to the Hansa Bay area. “Upon sighting the raft, he circled overhead in order to attract the enemy fire away from the floating airmen. To discourage any enemy effort to capture them, he made three strafing runs over positions along Manam Island. He continued to provide aerial protection until a seaplane arrived and effected a rescue. His gallantry in subjecting himself to hostile fire and possible interception while aiding his fellow flyers exemplified the finest traditions of the service.
