Tedrick Irwin was pilot of a F-51D Mustang night fighter with the 12th Fighter-Bomber Squadron, 18th Fighter-Bomber Group. On January 31, 1952, while on a combat mission, his aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire, caught fire and crashed into the crest of a ridge. His remains were not recovered.

The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Irwin, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
