The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Sidney C. Howe, United States Army Air Forces, for heroism in action while serving with the 19th Transport Squadron, VII Bomber Command, SEVENTH Air Force, during the attack on Hickam Field, Territory of Hawaii, by Japanese forces (aircraft) on 7 December 1941. Technical Sergeant Howe, with utter disregard for his personal safety, in the face of overwhelming enemy aerial machine gunnery and aerial bombardment, returned the enemy fire with heroism until severely wounded by fragments of an exploding bomb, resulting in the loss of his left arm. The heroism displayed by Technical Sergeant Howe reflected great credit upon himself and the military service.
