The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Jerry Pinkston Holman (AFSN: FR-26098), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a CH-3 Helicopter Mission Commander against a hostile armed force near Khe Sanh, Republic of Vietnam, on 23 January 1968. On that date, Major Holman led his formation of three CH-3’s on low-level, low-airspeed classified ordnance delivery drops over three separate concentrations of hostile troops North and West of Khe Sanh. He completed the first run, and then escorted the second aircraft on its target run. During the third run, Major Holman’s aircraft was subjected to accurate heavy machinegun fire. Acting as the decoy for the other two aircraft, Major Holman’s CH-3 drew the hostile fire away from the formation by turning towards it source, and then silencing it with counter-fire. The other aircraft completed their drop unscathed. Major Holman then led the formation back to their home base safely. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Major Holman reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
