Duane Faw entered service in the U.S. Navy as an enlisted sailor after the attack on Pearl Harbor, and was commissioned as a Marine Corps second lieutenant in 1942 after completing Naval Aviator training. He retired as a U.S. Marine Corps Brigadier General in 1971.
