The skillful and zealous manner in which he has sought out the enemy and destroyed him, his devotion to duty and courage under all conditions serve as an inspiration to his fellow flyers.     The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Air Corps) Donald Edison Hillman (ASN: 0-418131), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action on 27 September 1944 while serving as Pilot of a P-47 Thunderbolt fighter airplane with the 396th Fighter Squadron, 365th Fighter Group, NINTH Air Force, in the European Theater of Operations, on 27 September 1944. Lieutenant Colonel Hillman distinguished himself by outstanding bravery and aerial proficiency while leading his squadron in aerial combat with a superior number of enemy aircraft over Germany. At great risk to his own personal safety he attacked alone and unescorted a flight of eight hostile planes; by his skillful maneuvering and intense fighting spirit he succeeded in destroying two of their number and forcing the remainder to withdraw. Lieutenant Colonel Hillman’s unswerving courage and self-sacrificing regard for the safety of his fellow pilots are exemplary of the finest traditions of the Army Air Force.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Colonel Donald Edison Hillman (ASN: 0-418131), United States Air Force, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commander, 42d Bombardment Wing (H) from June 1956 to January 1958. During this period, Colonel Hillman converted the 42d Bombardment Wing into the first operationally ready B-52 long range heavy jet bombardment force in the United States Air Force. Subsequent to training the combat crews and developing the essential support functions, he personally led elements of this unprecedented strike force on aerial flights which demonstrated the tremendous potential of this addition to our operational weapons system. The outstanding leadership, initiative, determination and devotion to duty displayed by Colonel Hillman reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major (Air Corps) Donald Edison Hillman (ASN: 0-418131), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a P-47 Fighter Pilot of the 365th Fighter Squadron, NINTH Air Force, in an armed reconnaissance mission in the European Theater of Operations on 25 June 1944. While approaching the target area Major Hillman, upon hearing a call from another squadron, led his formation to the attack. In the encounter which ensued Major Hillman became separated from his squadron, and, while pursing an enemy aircraft he was attacked by a flight of Messerschmitt planes. Demonstrating undaunted bravery and keen aerial skill in the face of grave obstacles he continued the attack, and, although greatly outnumbered and flying at low altitude over a strongly fortified area, Major Hillman succeeded in destroying two enemy aircraft and driving away the remainder. His gallant courage and unstinting devotion to duty under the most trying of circumstances are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Army Air Forces.
