The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Air Corps) Foy E. Higginbottom (ASN: 0-697200), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action while participating in a large number of fighter missions of the EIGHTH Air Force over Germany and occupied Europe from 27 April 1944 to 3 November 1944. Flying in the lead position on many occasions, Captain Higginbottom consistently performed his duties in a zealous and aggressive manner. On 3 November 1944, while furnishing withdrawal support, he repulsed a ME-262 interception attack by sheer determination and skill, despite the fact that his aircraft sustained heavy damage from ground fire. During the airborne invasion of Holland, Captain Higginbottom’s fearless and vigorous assaults against enemy ground installations and communications were a contributing factor to the safety of the troops concerned. The courage, devotion to duty and unyielding loyalty displayed by Captain Higginbottom during this period were outstanding to a degree which proved inspirational to those participating with him in combat. The courage, flying skill, and unyielding fighting spirit displayed by Captain Higginbottom are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Army Air Forces.
