(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain George R. Henthorn (ASN: AO-561266), United States Air Force, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Aircraft Commander of a B-29 Superfortress Bomber, during a single-ship night bombing raid on Uiju Airfield in North Korea, on 1 December 1951. As he began his bombing mission at 27,000 feet, Captain Henderson’s bomber ran into a barrage of lights and enemy MiG fighters which attacked and heavily damaged his Superfortress. Two members of his crew were wounded and the pressurized cabin was punctured, the entire rudder was shot away, one elevator was destroyed, and half of the aileron surface was blown off. There were more than 500 holes in the aircraft, and Captain Henthorn believed his bomber would not be able to reach Japan. Flying towards Seoul, South Korea, he was forced to make an emergency landing at a fighter airstrip. Major Henthorn’s gallant actions in the face of determined enemy opposition and in accomplishing his mission, and then returning his airplane and crew to a friendly landing strip, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
