Headquarters, U.S. Army, Vietnam, General Orders No. 6818 (December 14, 1966)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Infantry) Walter L. Karpinia (ASN: 0-5004613), United States Army, for heroism while participating in an aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty while serving with Headquarters, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Karpinia distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 14 October 1966 while serving as pilot during a mission of observation to a combat assault operation in Bien Hoa Province. While flying command helicopter, Captain Karpinia flew difficult, low level maneuvers throughout the day to avoid the concentrations of fire directed at the command aircraft. During this operation he was required to land his helicopter in unsecured and unprepared zones to ensure correct and positive coordination between the commander and ground forces. Captain Karpinia maneuvered his aircraft in such a professional and deceptive manner that he continued to keep the Viet Cong force off balance. He successfully placed the commander in positions that gave him effective control of the operational area. Captain Karpinia’s courage enabled the squadron to successfully complete the day’s operation, the night defense and the neutralizations of a local Viet Cong force. Captain Karpinia’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
