Clifton Heath was a member of the air crew of a Flying Fortress that was lost in action during its second run on enemy targets during the Battle of Midway. All nine members of Captain Porter’s crew were awarded Silver Stars, but there is no report of the valiant pilot receiving the award.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Clifton C. Heath (ASN: 6720975), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Combat Crew Members of a B-17 Flying Fortress Bomber of the 72d Bombardment Squadron, 5th Bombardment Group (Heavy), SEVENTH Air Force, in aerial operations during the Battle of Midway on 5 June 1942. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Corporal Heath, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
