The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Gilbert Hayden (AFSN: AO-14998/218A), United States Army Air Service, for gallantry in action while serving with the 59th Infantry Regiment, 4th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Argonne Forest, on 1 October 1918. Despite being wounded in the head, Sergeant Hayden remained at his post as an observer, demonstrating courage and fearlessness and disregard for personal safety. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Hayden, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Service.
