The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Technical Sergeant Evan N. Hale, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at Mt. St. Helens, Washington on 25 June 1966. On that date, Sergeant Hale parachuted under extremely hazardous conditions to the crash site of a light civilian aircraft. Although located on a dangerous incline at the 6,000-foot level, Sergeant Hale unhesitatingly climbed to the aid of the two surviving passengers. With complete disregard for his own safety and despite constant peril from falling rocks, Sergeant Hale aided in the removal of the survivors, administered first aid, and helped remove them down the mountainside where they were airlifted to safety. His actions were directly responsible for preservation of their lives. The exemplary courage, heroism, and outstanding professional ability displayed by Sergeant Hale reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
