    Headquarters, 9th Air Force, General Orders No. 1 (January 1, 1943) & General Orders No. 4 (January 8, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Frank Golotto (ASN: 11045050), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Radio Operator of a four-engine heavy bomber with the 344th Bombardment Squadron, 98th Bombardment Group (Heavy), NINTH Air Force, in action while participating in a damaging attack from 20,000 feet altitude on vital enemy shipping in Navarino Bay on 3 October 1942. After the bombing attack was finished four enemy pursuit aircraft intercepted the formation. During the resulting battle Sergeant Golotto remained at his station as radio operator and maintained his equipment so that the airplane commander had radio contact with the formation. At all times Sergeant Golotto remained in readiness to administer first aid or to man any gun position. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Golotto, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
