After the war he served in the New Jersey Air National Guard and was called to active duty during the Korean War and Berlin Crisis of 1961-1962, ultimately serving as Adjutant General of New Jersey and retiring as a Major General.

On that date, Captain Gerard shot down four enemy aircraft in aerial combat.
