The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Brigadier General Ivan Lonsdale Farman (ASN: 0-17922), United States Army Air Forces, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility as Commander of the Army Airways Communications System Wing from November 1943 to September 1945. Under his leadership AACS achieved full command status, grew from 15,000 to nearly 50,000 military members, and become a fully integrated airways communications system with overall management functions centralized at HQ AACS. This revolutionary arrangement proved eminently successful in providing uniformity, flexibility and efficiency; and insured a timely response to changing requirements of all Air Force commands involved in the war. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of General Farman and his dedicated contributions in the service of his country reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
