The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Air Force Achievement Medal with Valor to Captain Jesse A. Enfield, United States Air Force. Captain Enfield distinguished himself as HC-130P Navigator while engaged in ground operations against an opposing armed force at El Fashir, Sudan, on 28 November 2006. On that date, during an air-land mission, Captain Enfield and his crew were held at gun point and ordered to surrender to the Sudanese military under accusations of espionage. In the face of an overwhelming force, Captain Enfield boldly refused to surrender. When 15 armed military troops tried to force entry, he blocked the aircraft entrance ensuring crew and aircraft safety. He negotiated with the hostile force for over 4 hours at great risk, buying time for diplomatic action. The situation quickly escalated as the opposing force received aircraft seizure clearance. Facing imminent death, Captain Enfield again refused to surrender, implemented plans for protection of the aircraft, and prepared for the potential ensuing fight with over 150 heavily armed troops. Captain Enfield defended the aircraft for over 2 hours until diplomatic channels prevailed. All personnel, aircraft, and classified data were recovered. All 17 American detainees returned with honor. By his heroic actions and unselfish dedication to duty, Captain Enfield has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
