Robert Dunne was pilot of a F-84G Thunderjet fighter with the 8th Fighter-Bomber Squadron, 49th Fighter-Bomber Group. On September 13, 1952, while on a combat mission, his aircraft received a direct hit by anti-aircraft fire, crashed and burst into flames. His remains were not recovered.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant Robert Len Dunne (AFSN: AO-2223130), United States Air Force, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Pilot of an F-84 Thunderjet Fighter with the 8th Fighter-Bomber Squadron, 49th Fighter-Bomber Group, FIFTH Air Force, in action in Korea, in 1952. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Second Lieutenant Dunne, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
