Headquarters, 8th Air Force, General Orders No. 28 (February 19, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Air Corps) George Albert Doersch (ASN: 0-674288), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy as a P-51 Fighter Pilot of the 370th Fighter Squadron, 359th Fighter Group, EIGHTH Air Force, in action against the enemy in aerial combat in the European Theater of Operations, on 1 January 1945. On that date, Captain Doersch was near the limit of his operational range when he sighted approximately 18 FW-190’s preparing to intercept a formation of United States bombers in eastern Germany. Fully aware of the grave dangers attendant to a forced landing in enemy territory, but determined to protect the bombers at any cost, he led his section of P-51 Mustangs to the attack. Engaging the enemy with only three planes, the others having fallen behind, a running battle ensued which carried him deeper into hostile territory. With utter disregard for personal safety, he destroyed two and damaged one of the enemy fighters, while the other two pilots shot down two more and damaged another. The fact that Captain Doersch elected to pursue the foe despite the hazards involved, expending the last of his ammunition before withdrawing, attests to his determination to destroy the enemy at all costs. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Doersch, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
