(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Air Corps) Sherman Metcalf Dodge (ASN: 0-797491), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a B-17 Flying Fortress Bomber of the 331st Bombardment Squadron, 94th Bombardment Group (Heavy), EIGHTH Air Force, in aerial operations during the historic shuttle raid on Schweinfurt, Germany, on 14 October 1943. Lieutenant Dodge’s bomber was hit by flak and lost formation and headed for France. At 18,000 feet the bomber caught fire and enemy fighters attacked. Knowing that his airplane was fatally hit, Lieutenant Dodge steered a course to France to afford his crew a chance of escape. Because of his actions, for of his five surviving crew were able to evade and return to England. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Second Lieutenant Dodge, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
