The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain George T. Deken (AFSN: FR-71932), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a T-28 Tactical Fighter Pilot in Southeast Asia on 31 July 1967. On that date, Captain Deken, flying a highly vulnerable, vintage T-28 aircraft on a night armed reconnaissance, attacked a hostile convoy of supply-laden vehicles, destroying three, damaging others, and causing ten secondary explosions along the road in addition to destroying a hostile automatic weapon position. In an aggressive, slashing attack on the convoy, Captain Deken dove again and again through heavy, accurate defensive fire, working under flares at low altitude in bad weather, and tenaciously completed his mission. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Deken reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
