The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) to Captain Clifton Emmet Cushman (AFSN: FR-77354), United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as a F-105 Pilot over North Vietnam on 18 September 1966. On that date, Captain Cushman was a member of a flight of F-105’s assigned to destroy a vital petroleum products storage area located 30 miles northeast of Hanoi, North Vietnam. Despite extremely accurate and heavy anti-aircraft fire, reduced visibility, and strong threats from several SA-2 surface-to-air missile sites, he delivered his high explosive ordnance into the center of the area causing extensive destruction. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Cushman reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
