Second Lieutenant Crapsey was wounded by a 20-mm. cannon shell which broke his right leg and shattered his foot. Though suffering severe pain, he refused to allow the co-pilot to summon aid for him because his aircraft was being fiercely attacked by enemy fighters, and each crewman was busy warding off attacks. Instead, Lieutenant Crapsey applied a tourniquet to his leg in order to stop the heavy flow of blood and then aided the co-pilot in flying their damaged bomber back to England. After assisting the co-pilot in making a safe landing under difficult conditions, he lost consciousness.
