(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Air Corps) Frank Monroe Colburn (ASN: 0-725053), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Bombardier on a B-17 Flying Fortress Bomber in the 65th Bombardment Squadron, 43d Bombardment Group (Heavy), FIFTH Air Force, in aerial operations against enemy shipping of the southern coast of New Britain Island in Southwest Pacific Theater of Operations, on 22 November 1942. After locating two Japanese destroyers, the bomber attacked and was hit by antiaircraft fire which set it on fire, forcing the crew to bail out in hostile territory. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Second Lieutenant Colburn, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
