The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Sergeant Harry M. Cohen, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life near Terceira Island, Azores, Portugal on 19 January 1968. On that date, he volunteered to parachute to the aid of a critically injured seaman aboard the West German freighter “Elbe Oldendorff.” Despite low ceilings, poor visibility, 15 foot seas, gusty surface winds, and a report of sharks circling the vessel, Sergeant Cohen, with complete disregard for his own safety unhesitatingly parachuted to the aid of the stricken seaman. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellow man, Sergeant Cohen has reflected great credit on himself and the United States Air Force.
