The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant David Raphael Kasun, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 3d Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, in action against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Kasun distinguished himself while serving as an acting platoon leader during a combat operation in the A Shau Valley, Republic of Vietnam. As Company D advanced up Dong Ap Bia Mountain, a heavy volume of enemy machine guns, small arms, and rocket propelled fire inflicted heavy casualties and greatly restricted movement. Sergeant Kasun expertly maneuvered his platoon to a forward position to support the retaliatory fire of the stalled lead platoon. Despite the continuing intense enemy fire, he moved from position to position directing the fire of his men. While performing this courageous act he was seriously wounded by enemy fire. Disregarding his wound, he remained with his men, moving them into more strategic locations, directing fire and personally attacking enemy positions until his ammunition was expended. When the order was received to withdraw, he assisted in evacuating other wounded comrades and remained on the hill until all the casualties had been withdrawn. His courageous actions were a source of inspiration to his entire company and were directly responsible for minimizing the loss of life and injury to his fellow soldiers. Sergeant Kasun’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
