The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Brigadier General William S. Chairsell (AFSN: 0-441728/0-35730), United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight while serving as an F-105 Pilot, 388th Tactical Fighter Wing, Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action over Southeast Asia on 30 April 1967. On that date, General Chairsell was the flight commander on a strike against a heavily defended target in North Vietnam. Flying through devastating barrage of anti-aircraft fire General Chairsell led his flight on successive strikes on hostile positions resulting in destroyed gun positions and setting off numerous secondary explosions. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by General Chairsell reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
