The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Second Lieutenant Charles Pettit Heath Heyl, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 28 April 1876, while serving with 23d U.S. Infantry, in action at Fort Hartsuff (Grace Creek), Nebraska. Second Lieutenant Heyl voluntarily, and with most conspicuous gallantry, charged with three men upon six Indians who were entrenched upon a hillside.
