The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Captain Donald Lee Carty (AFSN: 0-49783), United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as a HH-53C Aircraft Commander, 40th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron, Udorn Royal Thai Air Base, Thailand, on 12 November 1969. On that date, Captain Carty directed his crew to the successful rescue of a pilot downed in hostile territory. This rescue was made even though the survivor’s position had not been pinpointed, and Captain Carty was constantly exposed to hostile ground fire while flying at low altitude and airspeed attempting to find the survivor. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Carty reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
