The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Clyde Walter Carter (AFSN: FR-55794), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-100 pilot assigned to the 90th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Bien Hoa Air Base, Republic of Vietnam on 8 November 1966. On that date, Captain Carter and his flight were called upon to lend Close Air Support to the U.S. Army forces engaged in close combat with the Viet Cong in Operation ATTLEBORO, near Tay Ninh City, Republic of Vietnam. Captain Carter demonstrated the highest caliber of professionalism and accuracy as he repeatedly delivered his ordnance against the Viet Cong within 25 meters of the friendly positions. Captain Carter’s actions came at a time when the American forces were under heavy attack by one North Vietnamese Battalion and one Viet Cong Battalion. His accurate and timely deliveries saved an untold number of American lives, and contributed significantly to the greatest victory yet experienced by Free World Forces in Vietnam. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Carter reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
